M45 Pershing 105mm - 1/48 Tamiya + scratch

Le char M45 est un char destiné à soutenir l'infanterie. Il s'agit d'un char M26 Pershing dont le canon antichar a été remplacé par un obusier de 105mm. Il fut utilisé en faible nombre durant la guerre de Corée.

Montage: La principale modification consiste à raccourcir le canon du kit Tamiya et à modifier le bouclier du canon. J'ai opté pour la simplicité en recouvrant le bouclier avec du mastic pour représenter un bouclier baché, ce qui semble avoir été fréquent pour ce type de char. Deux ouvertures en tubes plastiques on été introduites dans le mastic pour la mitrailleuse coaxiale et le système de visée. La mitrailleuse de tourelle a été avancée au niveau de la trappe du chef de char (ce n'est pas le cas sur tout les M45). L'autre modification importante consiste à créer en scratch un nouveau pot d'échappement avec son armature protectrice.

Décorations: Ayant peu de photos d'époque, je me suis inspiré des marquages proposés pour la version M26 engagée en Corée. La peinture est du kaki Tamiya XF62.

Parties mobiles: la tourelle est mobile, le canon est fixe

Cette modification est assez facile à réaliser, la seule difficulté est de trouver de la documentation. Pour ma part, je me suis inspiré du plan Hunnicut paru dans la revue américaine AFV G2 vol. 4 n°6.

The M45 tank was designed for infantry support. It is a M26 Pershing whose anti-tank gun was replaced by a 105mm howitzer. It was used in low quantity during Korea War.

Building: The main modification consist of shortening the original Tamiya gun and modifying the gun shield. I decided to do it the easy way: the shield was covered with putty the make it looking as if it was covered with tarpaulin, which was common for this kind of tank. 2 openings on the shield were made using plastic tube: one for the coaxial machine gun, one for the optical systems. The turret machine gun was displaced to the front of the turret (this modification was not made on every M45). The other main modification is to build from scratch a new exaust pipe with protection.

Decoarations: As I got very few pictures of M45 during Korea War, I used pictures of M26 in Korea. The paint is Tamiya XF62.

Mobile parts: turret can move, gun can not move

This is an easy modification to do, the main problem is to get documentation. I used a Hunnicut plan published in american journal AFG G2 vol. 4 number 6.
